The First Time

All these years talking about food and this is my first blog post and, in Maryland this Summer, I ate the famous Maryland blue crab for the first time.

Living in Northern California, I look forward to Dungeness crab every year. We have parties and eat crab, a lot of crab. Some say that the Dungeness crab is just too much work, but I enjoy the meditative practice of picking and poking to get out that sweet meat. while laughing with friends. Are you a hoarder or do you eat the sweet crab meat as you go?

Blue crabs, on the other hand…there is no peace to be had when trying to get the meat. They have similar body parts to the Dungeness but at a thrid the size! Where with a Dungeness crab, I don’t skip picking at any of the parts, I quickly gave up on their small legs and stuck to the two claws. I have checked blue crabs off the list, never to be eaten again!

But, I must say, the the highpoint of the meal was the company of the new friend I was sharing this bucket of crabs with…interesting conversation sitting outside on a beautiful Summer day in Maryland.
